Melrose Almond Oil

Why do we have to use Melrose Almond Oil?

We have a general rule of thumb with OM body work - "if you can’t eat it or drink it then don’t put it on your skin!"

You may remember from your studies that our skin is our largest organ which absorbs as well as excretes, doing a magnificent job of protecting our inner body from the pollutants that circulate freely now on the planet. When we work with clients who have bodies and immune systems already compromised from the treatment of cancer then we like to do our best for them by not exposing them to more biological strain. H2 Superfine oils are keenly promoted in the massage industry and once on the skin are absorbed, processed in the liver, and excreted via the kidneys.

  • Rapidly absorbed into the skin.
  • Low in odour.
  • Excellent carrier for essential oil blends.
  • Safe for those with nut allergies as it's a seed from the Drupe family, and not a nut. However, it is recommended that those living with nut allergies do a skin test prior to their massage.
  • It has a PH of between 4-5 and is close to the skin's ideal PH of 5-5.5. Aids in protection from bacteria and fungus by keeping the skin close to its PH.
  • Ingestible.

Did you know? The H2 Superfine oil has Laureth-3 (surfactant/emulsifier) in it which is a synthetic compound obtained by extensive chemical modification of lauric acid, a natural fatty acid, and oxirane (ethylene oxide), and is also included in Dishwashing Powder, and Fabric Softener?

Where can I buy Melrose Almond Oil?

You can order this product online at Melrose Health or click here for a list of distributers for each State and Territory.

Tui Balms

For those of you in New Zealand, and for those in Australia who wish to try something new...

We know that in New Zealand, our students and graduates have had some difficulties obtaining Melrose Sweet Almond Oil. OML has had discussions with Tui Balms and we are happy for students to use Tui Balms "Tui Coconut & Aloe Vera Massage Butter". This is the only Tui Balms product we will accept on OML training courses. There are many more in their product range however, due to volunteer sensitivities, OML has only authorised the following products for oncology massage from Tui Balms' extensive range to be used on our courses.

Tui Coconut & Aloe Vera Massage Butter

Ingredients
Olive Oil, Certified Organic Coconut Oil, Certified Organic NZ Beeswax, Aloe Vera, Shea Butter, Vitamin E

Specific Uses
Natural, hypoallergenic massage butter that is nut oil and arnica oil free. Exceptional moisturising and restorative properties for challenged skin. Rich creamy texture with a sweet coconut scent. Suitable pre-surgery.

Considerations
Check with your client that the scent is not too strong.

Available
In 50g, 100g, 300g and 500g pots

Tui Unscented Massage Balm

Ingredients
Almond Oil, Olive Oil, Certified Organic NZ Beeswax, Vitamin E, Arnica Oil

Specific Uses
Gentle, natural balm with a subtle beeswax scent for all over body massage. Use when an unscented massage balm is required. Soothes and moisturises the skin.

Considerations
The Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center advises caution regarding Arnica Oil.  It is contra-indicated for some people, particularly those in pre or post surgery, and those taking anti-coagulant or anti-platelet drugs. Therapists are advised to encourage their clients to check with their primary health care provider before use.

Available
In 50g, 100g, 300g, 500g pots, and 460g pump bottles

Advice

As with all new massage products and all new massage clients, always do a skin patch test to check if a specific product causes an allergic reaction, and always check with your client that the scent is not problematic.  People who have had, or are receiving, chemotherapy may have an altered sense of smell.

LymphDIY - Self Massage Guides

$9.95 - Downloadable Instruction Guides and Videos

This product cannot be ordered through OML. Please order online througLymphDIY.

Tania Shaw, OML’s Executive Manager, and Jillian Exton, creator of Chemical Free Community website and Breast Cancer “T-shirt owner”, met in 2010 as Therapist and Client. Both women enjoyed sharing their knowledge, experiences and insights so much they decided to make a video showing the self massage routine essential for self care. The video was received with excitement and great relief by many at finally getting some clarity around the self-massage required for lymphoedema. Within ten months there were more than 67,600 views on YouTube!

In response to demand, they created instruction guides and videos filled with diagrams and easy to understand and implement strategies. Their relaxed style, sense of humour and insightful approach to a sometimes confusing area of self-care is informative and refreshing.
